Want to know more? Here’s a short film about Kamishibai and some information.

Kamishibai originated in the buddhist temples of Japan in the 12th century, where the monks used scrolls to tell moral tales. It had a revival in the 1920’s to 50’s when the kamishibai storyteller (usually a man) would travel from place to place on a bicycle. Stopping on street corners, they would give or sell sweets to attract an audience before telling a story using pictures, music and characterisation. Often the story would be episodic so it would be left on a cliff hanger and the audience would have to wait until the next visit to find out what happened!
